Angelica is a beautiful princess chained to a rock near the ocean as a sacrifice to a sea monster called the Orc. Ruggiero is a brave warrior knight who happens to fly past on a hippogriff (a magical creature that is half horse and half eagle) and saves her. The rescue story became so famous that many artists drew and painted it. Perhaps the most well known is in the Louvre, by the artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, painted in 1819. this pendant was once half of a pair of cuff links.
